Homework Help
Students who struggle through homework assignments can feel discouraged and unmotivated. The key to making homework time more productive is to help your child improve her study skills. Homework help is essential to maintain your child's positive attitude and self-confidence.
Establish a study schedule for your child.
Homework will be an easier task if your child knows that 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. every night is the designated time to do work. Make yourself available to help with homework so that your son or daughter feels supported. Adjusting to a homework schedule will help your child better manage his time.
Participate in your child's homework.
If you know your child is struggling through her nightly homework, go through the problems together. Try bringing a book to the table so you and your child can work or read side-by-side. Offer to quiz your child, and give positive reinforcement for good study skills and work behavior.
Turn on classical or soft music for your child.
Aside from the calming effect, some people find that music helps them to focus. There have been a variety of studies conducted about music's positive effect on the brain. Try putting on soft music for your child while she studies. Remember that everyone has different study habits, and what works for one child might not be helpful to another.
Keep supplies handy for homework time.
Elementary school children need a variety of school supplies to complete their assignments. We suggest maintaining a stock of crayons, markers, colored pencils, glue, glitter, construction paper, and any other creative materials you believe will help with homework time. Middle and high school students should have plenty of notebooks, pens, and highlighters to take notes on their reading and emphasize important information. The right tools can help your child complete his homework in the way that best works for him.
Atmosphere is everything.
Sometimes a small change of scenery can make a big difference. Suggest going to the library one night to help with the homework blues. A quiet coffee shop or café is another option. Be sure the location you choose doesn't have too many distractions. Before you know it, your child will look forward to doing homework.
Start a homework club to improve study skills.
Children are often the most productive in groups. This allows them to learn from one another, and act as teachers when one of their peers has a question. Set up an afternoon with three to four other students in your child's class, and provide healthy snacks. If the weather is nice, let them do their work outside. Be sure to let them know you will be checking their homework at the end of the session.
